The government is to make 1,200 properties available either for sale or rent in an effort to create more cash from unused sites.
The scheme is called ‘find me some government space’, and the buildings are being offered on a website, where people can do searches by postcode or area.
£640 million has been generated from the sale of over 250 buildings since the 2010 general election, while plenty of other properties have been standing unused for longer than ten years and are costing the taxpayer significantly.
The scheme is being launched by Cabinet Office Minister Chloe Smith, and will comprise over 300 properties to rent and 900 to buy across Britain.
The portfolio includes a magistrates court, fire control centre, ambulance station and two observatories. Bidston observatory in Merseyside is available to rent, as is a former fire control centre in Wakefield.
The site of a mortuary in Folkstone is also on the list - the land is being sold off for housing development. The prospectus describes the site as a ‘former Victorian hospital, including a disused mortuary, chapel and hall and tennis court with associated land.’
Chloe Smith commented on the mass sale: “We’re making the civil service more efficient and cutting waste, as a result we will have a number of properties both owned and rented that we need to do more with.
“Not only will this website help to save government money but we will see new opportunities, jobs and growth in local economies as new lie is brought into empty, unused properties.”
The website is live from 9am this morning (Friday, 25 January) at https://www.gov.uk/find-government-property.
