Formal plans and images have been submitted for a major redevelopment on the outskirts of Leeds.
The £400m Kirkstall Forge scheme runs along the banks of the River Aire and would include 112 houses and apartments as well as more than 31,000 sq ft of commercial space.
Phase two of the regeneration incorporates a mix of 75 houses and 37 apartments – the majority of which will be two to four storey houses, laid out in three terraces to form dense streets. The houses will have three to five bedrooms each and sit on top of subterranean parking garages.
Towards the centre of the development, the housing will become blocks rising up to seven storeys. The architecture of the houses will nod to the local stone of the area as well as the general style of traditional Yorkshire terraced streets.
At the centre of the development will be a key public space called 'The Stitch' as well as a pocket park and commercial areas.
Andrew Macintosh, a representative at architecture firm Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, said: "Much of our inspiration has been taken from ‘model villages’ such as Saltaire and the steep terraced streets found in many Yorkshire towns.
"The communal, pedestrian-friendly areas in front of the homes also benefits from contemporary Scandinavian ideas about co-housing and will help to build a true sense of community amongst those who are lucky enough to be the first to move into this pioneering new neighbourhood.
"This beautiful urban village creates spaces for a new generation to live, work and explore."
