The student village of Swansea University has been put up for sale as the university seeks to progress with its plans for a brand new campus on the outskirts of the city.
The Hendrefoilan student village currently accommodates some 1,644 students in the Sketty area of the city. The university is hoping to sell off the premises for development and have as many as 270 homes built there in two construction phases, beginning in 2015.
The university has taken on estate agent Savills to sell the land. No price has been put on the site, as the agents have said that bids for the village will depend upon the plans for them.
The university’s pro-vice chancellor, Iwan Davies, commented, “We will be creating purpose-built student accommodation on the new campus and the sale of Hendrefoilan forms an integral part of our sustainable business plan for financing our campus development, both at the new campus and on Singleton Park.”
Scott Caldwell, from the Cardiff office of Savills, said that they were expecting strong interest in the site from all of the major developers.
He explained, “Whilst the site will not be available until after completion of the student residents at the new campus in 2015, there is a lot of preparatory work to undertake between now and then and the university has decided to appoint a developer to work with in obtaining the best planning permission for the site.”
