Irish telecoms and IT firm Viatel has expanded with the acquisition of parts of UK-based IT services firm Cybit. Dublin-headquartered Viatel has acquired Cybit’s Belfast-based cyber operations for an undisclosed sum in a deal backed by strategic investment from Macquarie Capital.
Cybit’s cybersecurity business, Cybit Cyber, provides a full suite of security solutions, partnering with industry leaders including F5 Networks, Check Point, Qualys, Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet.
The company also provides consultancy services to a wide range of enterprise and public sector organisations across the island of Ireland, the north of England and Scotland. The group’s other UK divisions are unaffected by the deal.
The transaction considerably bolsters Viatel’s cybersecurity services offering, with the buyer saying the acquisition would particularly boost its ability to address the intricate, critical security challenges that enterprises face.
Viatel Technology Group CEO Paul Rellis (pictured above, right, with Cybit Cyber's Paddy Trainor, left) said that Cybit Cyber’s “exceptional technical knowledge supports customers with multifaceted cybersecurity needs and those operating in highly regulated markets.”
He continued: “Adding this level of cybersecurity acumen to Viatel’s networking experience and Microsoft expertise further establishes Viatel as the preferred technology partner for mid-market and enterprise organisations across Ireland, the UK and internationally.”
“The integration of this deep expertise will ensure Viatel are exceptionally well-placed to protect and defend the integrity of our customers’ operations.”
The deal is the latest acquisition by Viatel, with recent transactions including its 2024 takeover of the technology division of managed print services provider MJ Flood and its 2023 acquisition of US-headquartered cloud-connected infrastructure provider Sungard Availability Services.
The acquisition of Sungard was the firm’s eighth since 2020, with other acquisitions including Nova Telecom, Wifiber, Irish Telecom, Action Point and SupportIT. M&A forms a core part of the company’s push to become Ireland’s first “complete business technology provider”.
Paddy Trainor, Managing Director at Cybit Cyber, said that the deal was a “significant step” for the firm and that it would position the company for growth in a market that has a critical need for its capabilities.
