A Lancashire-based health and safety specialist has been purchased by acquisitive compliance firm HSL Compliance. The acquisition of RJ Urmson Group is HSL’s third acquisition in the past 12 months.
The Midlands-based group says that the latest acquisition will enable it to provide air ventilation safety and compliance services for the first time, adding to its existing offering in water safety.
The deal comes in the wake of HSL Compliance’s January 2024 takeover of remote monitoring business Plexus Innovation and its August 2023 acquisition of Northern Ireland-based water safety firm Chemical Treatment Services. The acquisition takes its total headcount to more than 550.
HSL Compliance Chief Executive Gavin Hartley said that RJ Urmson had been built into “a market-leading operation with services that complement our own.”
He continued: “Many of our existing clients, particularly in the healthcare sector, have air ventilation and fire safety compliance requirements. Being able to provide these services, in addition to our market-leading water safety offering, is a great step forward and will support our mission to be the number one health and safety compliance provider in the UK.”
Founded in 1992, Chorley-based RJ Urmson provides services including water treatment and fire and ventilation testing. Following the acquisition, co-founder Robert Urmson will continue to lead the business as Managing Director alongside his daughter Louise, while the company will retain its existing branding.
Robert Urmson commented: “We’re a family-run business that has worked with many of our clients for more than 30 years, so its brilliant to start this next chapter of growth as a part of HSL Compliance, a business that shares our ambition and values. Our combined capabilities will allow us to deepen our offering and provide new opportunities to our committed staff.”
